Image Stabilization for m43 cameras: Your Thoughts?

As you know Olympus and Panasonic go different ways:

  • Olympus use in body sensor stabilization which means all lenses are stabilized
  • Panasonic uses in lens stabilization

For stills I like the Olympus approach. For video I am not sure. What is your take?

The good thing about m4/3 is that you can choose the best of both worlds by using Olympus bodies and (some) Panasonic lenses. That way you can really test which is better. I have 3 m4/3 bodies and 7 lenses. I have not found anything lacking from the Olympus stabilisation, which is also getting better all the time. And maybe that is the most important point. Lenses last a long time. There is really no need to change a lens to a newer version, at least not within 10-15 years. But digital bodies keep changing, getting better, also in stabilisation. With only lens based stabilisation you are stuck. I do not shoot video so cannot comment on that.

I think so too. For stills the E-M5 is a great choice and the lenses are can be from all sources. Here is our set:

- Pana 7-14mm
- Pana 45mm Macro
- Olympus 14-54mm 43 (not m43) zoom
- 85mm Zeiss f/4 M-Mount
- Pana 100-300mm for longer reach

Yes.IBIS is great, and so is the possibility to combine lenses from all sources.

My preferred set at this time is:
OM-5
Pana 12-35 2.8
Pana 45 macro 2.8
Oly 75, 1.8

I also have a Pana 45-200. But I use it rarely because it is no match optically to the first set.

No surprise.
